A big part of learning about cholesterol and how it relates to your good health is knowing the difference between good and bad cholesterol. First of all, cholesterol cannot travel by itself in the bloodstream, so it travel in packages called lipoproteins. There are two kinds of lipoproteins that carry cholesterol. The bad cholesterol is low density lipoprotein, or LDL, because it carries cholesterol to body tissues, like the arteries in your heart. High amounts of LDL in your blood can cause buildup in the arteries of your heart, leading to heart disease or heart attack.
The good cholesterol is high density lipoprotein, or HDL, because it takes cholesterol from the body tissues to the liver, which ultimately removes it to the body. The key to having a healthy cholesterol level is having a low level of LDL (bad) cholesterol in your blood, and a high level of HDL (good) cholesterol in your blood. A number of medical researchers have found that green tea can help increase good cholesterol levels, and lower bad cholesterol and overall cholesterol levels. Check with a health-care professional to see if green tea can help you achieve a healthy cholesterol level.
